The sadness of the sea,
waves like words, broken,
hearts like shells, shattered;
previous presences
waves wash away;
footprints gone,
keep concealed,
fish, fowl and seaweed fallow,
under froth white foam
of the sea;
waters spume and spray,
with their withdrawal
haloed by light
disappearance
the pale nobility that
quiet, baptismal
ripening demands,
the letting go.
